EPS Literacy and Intervention Honors 2013 Academy Star Winners

Awards Recognize Students for Learning Gains in Reading and Math, Teachers for Going Above and Beyond

GREENVILLE, Wis. (June 4, 2013) – EPS Literacy and Intervention today announced the winners of its 2013 Academy Star Awards. These annual awards honor students who have overcome significant challenges to build proficiency in reading and math, as well as teachers who go above and beyond on a daily basis to provide their students with every opportunity to improve their skills. Four students were recognized as Academy Stars and two teachers earned Academy Teachers of Excellence honors.

“We are so proud of the 2013 Academy Star Award Winners,” said Rick Holden, President, EPS. “The students worked hard to triumph over a multitude of challenges and the teachers displayed incredible passion towards helping their students reach the finish line. We are honored to have the opportunity to highlight the achievements of these young people and the educators who guide them towards success not only in the classroom, but beyond.”

While all nominated students receive recognition as Academy Stars, two students, Michael C., a fourth grader from Vicksburg Intermediate School, Vicksburg, Miss., and Greg J., a seventh grader from the Cooperative Behavior Center (CBC), Garland, Texas, are the Academy Star Students of the Year and will each receive a $100 gift card to

Dedicated teachers who go above and beyond in the classroom to help their students overcome math and reading challenges are also honored. Two Academy Teachers of Excellence, Donna Dwiggins, Pearl River Central Upper Elementary School, Carriere, Miss., and Tangle Luckett, Camden Elementary School, Camden, Miss., will receive a $100 gift card to and a $350 gift certificate to be used towards the purchase of materials from the EPS catalog. Dwiggins is honored for her teaching with the Academy of MATH® and Luckett is honored for her teaching with the Academy of READING®.

Students recognized for their progress in building skills using the Academy of READING are:

Michael C., fourth grade, Vicksburg Intermediate School, Vicksburg, Miss.
Michael started the school year with an independent reading level nearly two years behind his current grade level. Though hesitant at first, Michael came each day ready and eager to work on the Academy of READING. Within three months, he had completed half the program and now has an Academy placement level above his current grade level. Michael started out as a reluctant reader and is now looking for challenging books to read.

Karryne T., eighth grade, Reedy Creek Middle School, Cary, N.C.
Karryne entered the eighth grade knowing she would need extra help with her reading. She began to work with Academy of READING and showed improvement immediately. Even an unforeseen medical condition that interrupted her schooling did not deter her from continuing her progress. By the time Karryne finished Academy of READING, she’d made a gain of seven levels. Now Karryne finds that she doesn’t struggle as much with the work in her other classes and is almost always seen with a book in her hand.

Students recognized for their progress learning with the Academy of MATH are:

Greg J., seventh grade, Cooperative Behavior Center (CBC), Garland, Texas
Greg had behavioral issues which were impeding his progress in the classroom. When he began Academy of MATH, he tested at below grade level. He enjoyed working on the computer and became so focused on improving his math skills that he asked to work on Academy of MATH before school and during lunch. Greg made significant progress in his math skills, and the academic success he experienced gave him confidence to do better in all areas of his life.

Payton S., seventh grade, Waterloo Junior High, Waterloo, Ill.
Payton has been working on the Academy of MATH for two years and is realizing great gains. She has worked incredibly hard this year, and in the last three months made two level gains. Payton is a hard worker whose dedication has paid off.
