Neurodevelopmental Examinations (PEET, PEER, PEEX 2, PEERAMID 2)

Grades PK–12

By: Melvin D. Levine, M.D., F.A.A.P.

The 4 Neurodevelopmental Examinations (PEET, PEER, PEEX 2, and PEERAMID 2) are designed to provide standardized observations on children’s functional health and its relationship to their neurodevelopmental and behavioral states. Each test corresponds to a different age group, as follows:

PEET (Pediatric Extended Examination at Three): Age 3 NOW AVAILABLE AS A FREE DOWNLOAD!
PEER (Pediatric Examination of Educational Readiness): Ages 4–6
PEEX 2 (Pediatric Early Elementary Examination): Ages 6–9
PEERAMID 2 (Pediatric Examination of Educational Readiness at Middle Childhood): Ages 9–15

The tests should be administered by health-care professionals and are normally given to at-risk children. The Neurodevelopmental Examinations allow clinicians to integrate medical, developmental, and neurological findings while making observations of behavioral adjustments and style. Data obtained from these tests should be integrated with data obtained from parents and teachers through standardized questionnaires such as The ANSER System.

PEERAMID 2 assesses a child’s performance on 35 tasks in 5 different areas of development: fine motor/graphomotor function, language function, gross motor function, memory function, and visual processing function. Children are also rated on attention at various points throughout the exam. Although PEERAMID 2 does not yield an overall score or diagnostic label, the results can help generate a description of a child’s developmental profile.

The PEERAMID 2 was revised in the late 1990s based on recent research in the field of learning disorders, advances in the study of neurodevelopmental function, and feedback from clinicians in the field. PEERAMID 2 now contains tasks that tape the higher language abilities needed for success in secondary school, including the interpretation of ambiguous sentences and the ability to draw verbal inferences. Formal assessments of critical aspects of memory function include tests of visual and verbal recall, short term memory, motor memory, and rate of retrieval. Rating systems are provided for the use of strategies, for attention, and for behavior and affect.

The following tasks are assessed in the PEERAMID 2:

Fine Motor/Graphomotor Function:
• Lateral preference
• Imitative finger movement
• Sequential finger opposition
• Alternating fists
• Pencil speed
• Cursive alphabet

Language Function:
• Phonological manipulation
• Rapid verbal recall
• Category naming
• Picture parts naming
• Yes, no, maybe
• Verbal instructions
• Sentence formulation
• Sentence ambiguity
• Missing information
• Paragraph summarization and comprehension

Gross Motor Function:
• Rapid alternating movement
• Sustained motor stance
• Tandem balance
• Catch ball in cup
• Hopping in place
• Total associated movements and synkinesia score
Memory Function:
