Attack Math

Arithmetic Tasks to Advance Computational Knowledge
Grades 1–6

By: Carole Greenes, George Immerzeel, Linda Schulman, Rika Spungin

Each arithmetic operation is covered in three books, with Book 1 teaching basic facts and Books 2 and 3 teaching multidigit computation with whole numbers. In addition to teaching basic facts, all 4 first books ask students to draw pictures to find answers and to solve application-story problems. Each Book 1 contains Checkpoints and a Testpoint to evaluate progress. In Books 2 and 3 for each operation a flagpole features the sequence of steps to be followed for each new procedure. Books also contain practice pages, many of which are self-checking, and application-story problems. A Checkpoint and Testpoint monitor progress at the middle and end of each book.

Attack Math: Multiplication 1

Attack Math, Multiplication 1: Basic Facts begins with a model for multiplication. Students identify number of groups, number in each group, and number in all. They write multiplication sentences and make drawings to find answers. The terms "factors" and "products" are introduced, and used in generalizations about commutativity and zero and 1 as factors.

Attack Math: Multiplication 2

Attack Math, Multiplication 2: Multiplying by a Single-Digit Number introduces the procedure for multiplying 2- and 3-digit numbers by a single-digit factor. Students work with examples that require no regrouping, 1 regrouping, and then 2 regroupings. They learn to write horizontal problems in vertical form.

Attack Math: Division 1

Attack Math, Division 1: Basic Facts begins with a model for division. Students identify the number in all, the number in each group, and the number of groups. They write division sentences and make drawings to find the answers to problems. They learn the terms "divisor" and "quotient". Other exercises include vertical division problems, quotients with remainders, and zero groups.
