The Memory Factory

Grades 7–12

By: Melvin D. Levine, M.D., F.A.A.P.

The Memory Factory is a tool designed to help students better understand memory function. The floor plan of working “memory factory” clearly depicts the flow of information into and through various departments, where it is sorted, retrieved, and assembled. Self-assessments encourage students to think about thinking, and discover their strengths and weaknesses with memory. Evaluators and teachers use the assessments and Guidelines to customize instruction and assist students in overcoming particular difficulties.

Skills Addressed

The Memory Factory Guidelines The Memory Factory Guidelines for Use with Students “tour” the three memory departments—short-term, active working, and long-term—which collaborate intimately in the learning process. The Guidelines provide instructors with detailed information about the types of memory, memory difficulties, strategies for improving memory and learning, and suggestions for individualizing instruction to students’ particular needs.

The Memory Factory Floor Plan The Memory Factory Floor Plan is a hands-on method for helping to demystify memory function, an essential yet often misunderstood ingredient in school. By “touring” the floor of the “Memory Factory,” an engaging diagram of memory processes, students discover how information is processed and retained, how memory functions during academic tasks, and how they can improve their short-term, active working, or long-term memories. After the tour, students complete a self-assessment of their “personal memory factory” to determine how their memory functions and the areas in which they excel or need improvement.

The Memory Factory Floor Plan is available in sets of one dozen.

The Memory Factory Cassette Dr. Mel Levine leads students on a virtual tour of the mind’s “Memory Factory” on audio cassette. Students can follow the floor plan as Dr. Levine takes them from through the Short-term, Active Working, and Long-term Memory departments. Students hear the Selector, Assembler, and retriever robots at work as they process information that needs to be remembered, used, or stored. Dr. Levine explains each process along the way, sharing anecdotes and advice.

Examining the diagram of The Memory Factory while listening to this recording can provide an overview of memory prior to class discussions or counseling sessions. It is also useful when used for review.
