Wordly Wise®

Grades 2–12

By: Kenneth Hodkinson, Joseph Ornato

Each lesson in Books A, B, and C begins with a Word List of 8-12 words, followed by clear, brief definitions and sentences that illustrate the meaning of the word in context. Although some of the words may appear familiar to students, one of the objectives of this series is to help bridge the gap between students’ thinking they know what a word means and actually being able to put the meaning into words.

Books B and C often present more than one meaning of a word. Throughout the 3 books, drawings illustrate the meanings.

Following the word list definitions in Books A, B, and C are

- a true/false exercise: the answers are given in scrambled order at the bottom of the page

- a Hidden Message exercise: the students are given a definition, and they must fill in the adjacent puzzle boxes with the correct vocabulary word When completed, the puzzle contains the answer to a riddle

Book C contains an additional exercise that requires the student to rewrite a sentence using a vocabulary word in place of an underlined phrase. Each lesson concludes with a crossword puzzle. At the beginning of each book, a comprehensive, alphabetized word list indicates by lesson the location of each word.

Each lesson in Books 1-9 introduces about 12-18 new words; the number of new words increases as the books become more challenging. The lessons contain several exercises that reinforce learning by teaching students to use words precisely in a variety of situations. Exercises A, B, and C use the new words in context, teach multiple meanings of words, and give practice using the words in sentences.

Correct completion of Exercise D in Books 1-3 and Exercise E in 4-6 gives part of a quotation, poem, or riddle. Beginning with Book 4, an additional exercise addresses roots, prefixes, and suffixes.

Books 7-9 include exercises dealing with analogies, connotations, and literal and metaphorical usage.

Each lesson ends with the popular Wordly Wise section that gives information on correct usage and interesting word histories, and points out common verbal pitfalls.

The lessons in each book are divided into chapters; after each chapter, students complete a review Crossword Puzzle. At the end of Books 1-3 is an alphabetized glossary of all the vocabulary words covered; starting with Book 4, the glossary is replaced by a comprehensive word list that appears at the beginning of each book. Books 1-6 contain approximately 375 vocabulary words each; Books 7-9 contain approximately 500.

Tests are available for each book in the series.

In 2003 we added teacher's guides and reproducible tests helping you prepare your students for standardized testing. The original edition, Wordly Wise, will not be revised or updated. We provide this information to help you plan for upcoming school years and suggest you consider Wordly Wise 3000.

The test booklet for Wordly Wise, Book 9 contains a test for each chapter and a final test. The tests provide questions in a variety of formats that test students' knowledge of the words taught in Book 9. They include matching words and meanings, filling in the blanks, doing true/false exercises, and marking whether or not a word has been used correctly. The tests provide teachers with a useful, easy-to-score assessment tool. They come in packages of 6, with an Answer Key.
