All Kinds of Minds

Grades 3–6

By: Melvin D. Levine, M.D., F.A.A.P.

All Kinds of Minds is a fictitious account of five different students who have learning differences. The first chapter sets the scene by describing first day of school at the setting for the rest of the story. The next five chapters of the book profile each of the student characters, an appealing and engaging way for students to identify with learning differences they may have themselves. A seventh chapter winds up the fictional portion of the book with a discussion among the student characters on how they manage their learning differences in the classroom and throughout the day. The final chapter is a nonfiction review of important concepts and terminology.

Dr. Levine’s nonthreatening approach and no-nonsense attitude resonates with students who struggle in an academic setting. Engaging art draws students in without babying them. Most importantly, the emphasis on acceptance of all kinds of minds gives a valuable boost to the self-esteem of students who are often underconfident.

Cassette recordings of the book read by the author are available, as are Guidelines for Use.
