The SPARK to ignite every student’s potential

Introducing NEW Success Coach – the newest ELA and Math instruction and practice program for grades 3–5 from Coach®. The powerful sequence of active targeted instruction, two-level practice, and progress tracking extends the reach of your teaching. Because when your students receive that kind of concentrated attention, it all comes together for them.

Student Edition

Developed for today's diverse classrooms and rigorous curricula, Success Coach, ELA provides review and practice in the essential skills for computational fluency and conceptual understanding.

Targeted Content

Success Coach lessons focus on specific skills and skill groups, enabling you to concentrate instruction in the areas where students struggle and need reteaching or review. The lessons cover the most frequently assessed skills that students must master to become proficient and confident readers and writers.

Reading units provide review of and practice with comprehension and analysis skills. The writing unit steps students through the writing process for a variety of modes. The language unit provides review of and practice with vocabulary strategies and the grammar and mechanics rules required for clear expression.

Success Coach follows the Gradual Release of Responsibility model of instruction, also known as "I do, we do, you do." Students encounter teacher-guided review (I do) and scaffolded practice (we do) as they work through skills. Instructional strategies in the Teacher Edition provide support as you deliver the review lessons.

Success Coach includes two levels of independent student practice (you do) in each lesson.

  • Practice 1 provides the opportunity for students to show their understanding of the skill at its basic level through their success with answering a variety of items types. In reading lessons, Practice 1 passages have Lexile® measures* lower than those of Practice 2 passages, but within the grade-level range suggested by state standards.
  • Practice 2 provides more rigorous practice with challenging questions and less support. This section mirrors the level of high-stakes assessments and enables students to demonstrate a high level of proficiency with the skill. In reading lessons, Practice 2 passages have Lexile measures higher than those of Practice 1 passages. The readability measures fall within the grade-level range suggested by state standards.

Unit Reviews and Performance Tasks provide assessment opportunities to check how students have progressed toward skill proficiency.

Student Edition

Developed for today's diverse classrooms and rigorous curricula, Success Coach Mathematics provides review and practice in the essential skills for computational fluency and conceptual understanding.

The Student Edition supports success with the following features

Comprehensive Coverage

Success Coach addresses a range of mathematics standards while offering teachers the ability to concentrate instruction in areas where students need the most help to succeed on their assessments. It delivers engaging student content and provides options for all students.

Success Coach follows the Gradual Release of Responsibility model of instruction. Every lesson starts with Getting the Idea ("I do"), in which the teacher does the bulk of the instruction and explaining. Students complete some tasks, giving teachers the opportunity to check for understanding before they move on to the next part of the lesson. In the Coached Example ("We do"), students begin to practice the skill with support from hints in the Student Edition. When they reach Practice 1 and Practice 2 ("You do"), students have developed the proficiency to work independently on increasingly challenging levels of practice.

Each lesson in Success Coach has two levels of practice, allowing for maximum flexibility and use.

  • Practice 1 provides the opportunity for students to show their understanding of the skill at its basic level, answering questions with lower difficulty levels
  • Practice 2 provides rigorous practice with challenging questions and less support, mirrors the difficulty level of items on high-stakes assessments, and challenges students to demonstrate a higher level of proficiency with the skill.

Unit Reviews provide opportunities to evaluate student progress toward skill mastery and Performance Tasks measure how well students apply their knowledge, skills, and abilities to authentic problems.
